Wednesday 22nd.
This morning I met up with Joanne Kelly with the intention of buying puppies and adult dogs from her. Jo is very serious about genuine Inuit sled dogs. With a reputation as a known authority on the breed it was a joy to look around Jo’s dogs today. Since the introduction of the snowmobile to the Arctic in the 60’s, recognized Inuit sled dogs have been on the verge of extinction. There are only 200 known registered such dogs in existence, worldwide. I left securing three puppies and two adults.

Inuvik basked in the sun when we landed. This evening I began to learn how to run again. It felt very strange and slow. If you fancy your chances at a race would be a good time to take me on.

Thursday 23rd.
A wildlife officer in Inuvik granted me the C.I.T.E.S. export permit. The teeth will please my UK schoolteacher cousin, Elizabeth, whose doing a project on wolves. I’m pleased I didn’t have any big ideas about hauling any of the bowhead whalebones back with me. This whale is on a list stating no part must leave Nunavut. Understandably C.I.T.E.S. was established to control the import and export between signatory nations of species considered to be endangered, threatened or potentially so. The permits look very formal. Official permits that must now accompany the teeth and feathers.
