I went to a pick-your-own farm. My digits went nimble on
raspberries, currants and strawberries.
I had a couple of new tents to try out and set them up on
Tooting Common. As the sun blazed kids played games, picnic
blankets were spread and ice creams were licked.
Mid-July and London baked in 36ºC sun. On the Underground it
topped 50ºC. I walked into a shop without gloves on. A teenager
shop boy asked me what I’d done to my amputated finger. The
stump was still covered with its little Lycra slip to reduce
swelling. I removed the slip and said, “Frostbite.” The kid
said, “Cool, will it grow back?” Sadly he wasn’t joking.
