2007-2008 Greenland winter

April 2008

April was filled with a 21-day 400-mile dog sled expedition to northeast Greenland’s Ella Island, a destination that took us into the world’s biggest National Park. Sled and weather conditions were near perfect. Sea ice was thick and fast most of the time and any deep snow sections didn’t last long. Winds didn’t prevent us from travelling and icy mountainsides weren’t as tricky as they can be.

We did have a few 40 below days and I was pleased my hands were snug with palm sized HotHands heat pouches from Heatmax inside my gloves and mittens.

The five dog teams were owned and driven by Inuit hunter friends, former members of the SIRIUS dogsled patrol and myself. The SIRIUS Patrol is an elite Danish military unit whose purpose is to maintain Danish sovereignty, police jurisdiction and military surveillance in northeast Greenland by dog-team.

One rest day recipe I do have and make up with fruits is ice cream. I simply mix up water with powdered milk add vanilla sugar with plenty of Just Tomatoes fruit and pop it outside my tent. The secret is to stir the mixture once in a while to break up the ice crystals before it freezes solid. Dehydrated fruits and vegetables from Just Tomatoes have enabled me to pack food I’d ordinarily not have taken.

I live in a very remote community of Greenland that ranks as one of the most windswept places in the northern hemisphere. The population is 500 in a municipality the size of Great Britain. A couple of boxes of vegetables and fruit are flown here once in a while. Storms delay flight landings. Five weeks is the longest I’ve know flight landings to be delayed. To say food arrives fresh is an exaggeration.

Consequently, my diet ingredient from Just Tomatoes means I have never been nutritionally healthier on summer and winter journeys.

I fed my dogs their Nutrience Active, food that made sure they went out and returned fit and healthy.
