March was made up of day after day 8 hour conditioning
runs, sometimes camping out for a week at a time.
I layer
Bridgedale Endurance Summit socks with
Thermal liners. For summer trips I wear Bridgedale Endurance
Trekker socks. At home there’s no end, I train twice-daily
averaging 100 running miles weekly wearing Bridgedale
socks. Tough life socks.
On journey nights my stove melts 90 litres of snow to
boil 12 litres of water for my dogs. Some things can be
improvised in the Arctic. A stove cannot. In extreme cold it
sustains life. I use
MSR Whisperlite stoves. They’re
quiet enough for me to listen out for a loose dog, fighting
or incoming bears. My dogs’ reaction to these circumstances
differs. I want to hear it.
Some of you might be planning a Greenland adventure.
You’ll need stove fuel so here’s a fuel list translation for
you:
- Car gas/petrol - benzin
- White gas/ naphtha - rense benzin/heptane
- Diesel – gas oil
- Meths/alcohol – sprit
- Kerosene – petroleum
Whatever
you do don’t take it for granted your first choice fuel will
be available in any part of Greenland, same with food
because come June our own store is beginning to look
Spartan. We can expect our first re-supply ship to reach us
by July but it can be days even weeks late because of ice
conditions. All Greenland communities rely on these
re-supplies each year.
Injuries were not isolated to my dogs. Every season
there’s always sled, dog gear maintenance, tent and clothing
alterations or repairs to do. I use a block planer to keep
plastic runners slick.
